Why Female Sanitary Products Should Be Given Out For Free In Schools
In an effort to tackle ‘period poverty’, the Rhondda Cynon Taf council devised a plan for schools to give out free female sanitary products to girls aged nine and above. A six-month trial started this summer and has gained a lot of attention online. If it becomes a success (which, why wouldn’t it?) hopefully it will inspire other areas of Wales to follow suit. The issue of period poverty has gradually gained more and more attention over the last few years and finally, action is being taken. Some may argue that giving out free products is a waste of government money as there are plenty available in stores that are easily accessible. However, this is not always the case, especially for young girls. The purpose of this article is to discuss the reasons why Wales should be supported in this action and why schools should provide free female sanitary products to their pupils.
The products aren’t always cheap and can feel embarrassing to buy.
When adverts are portraying periods as blue liquid, a stigma becomes attached and if it’s your first time buying the products, it can feel embarrassing going up to the till. Even though we live in a modern world of self-service, for a young girl alone in the store it can be a daunting experience. When you eventually find the right section, you will notice that not all the items available are cheap, especially for a young girl with no job, living from pocket money. Not all parents can afford to buy these necessities, so what makes people think young children can afford to either? Yes, there are cheaper brands, but not all of them work. Sometimes the pads do not stick well and accidents occur. Like anything else, usually cost equates quality.
Not everyone has access to them. This is a safer and more sanitary option.
Not every child will have access to female sanitary products. Some may be experiencing period poverty where their guardians are unable to buy them regularly, some feel too embarrassed to even tell anyone they’ve started their period, and some live in a household that just doesn’t care. Our schools should give support to all their pupils in many ways and this would be a vital support system offered.
It can help reduce the stigma of periods and provide more education for everyone.
As I said earlier, the adverts on TV are portraying periods as unrealistic blue liquid. I understand that you don’t want them to go into too much detail, but by at least using the right colour, it could lower some of the stigma attached to periods. They are a natural cycle for most women and are uncontrollable. Young girls shouldn’t have to feel embarrassed or disgusting when they go to get female sanitary products. Presenting schools with this opportunity opens up conversations with a wider audience and can even be a chance to educate boys on periods too. Many already live with female siblings, parents, family members, etc and have some vague understanding. So why are they still being thrown out of class during this discussion?
Helps prevent accidents and ensures no young girl misses out on her education.
A huge problem with period poverty, is the resulting loss of education. Many girls feel too embarrassed to attend school during their period. They become frightened of potential stains and the bullying that will result in them. By handing out free female sanitary products, embarrassment will lessen and girls will feel safe enough to attend classes. The anxiety of stains “coming through” will disappear and their concentration will improve. Such a simple solution to a huge problem that can affect the futures of many girls.
It is an opportunity to discuss different options of sanitary products.
I never knew about the menstrual cup until I attended university. I had no idea that there were such things as reusable pads, I thought the only options available were those sold on the shelves in stores. Why wasn’t I educated on all of this? Why are girls still not educated on this? By dispensing free products, it opens up the conversation on what else is available and why they are different. If girls have questions, hopefully this will encourage them to ask their teachers, creating a safe space.
Period Poverty can greatly affect young girls’ mental health.
The anxiety that comes with period poverty can have a massive affect on young girls’ mental health. The constant worry of being bullied and embarrassed can often lead to social anxiety and, when exposed to other concerns like exam pressure for instance, can sometimes lead to depression. This would be one way to take the pressure off and make school a safer, more enjoyable environment.
It is an opportunity to remind the girls that someone cares and is willing to help.
For those who feel neglected, this simple solution could be the one sign they need to prove that someone cares. Providing these products can greatly improve a girl’s time at school and be the support they need to continue.
With the pressure of SATs and other exams increasing, this would be just one way to help improve a pupil’s time at school and the education they receive. Young girls should feel supported by their teachers and school. They should have a safe space to discuss their options and not feel judged because of an easily recognisable stain. With talk of rising female empowerment, free female sanitary products would be a step in the right direction, enhancing the image of equality and reducing the social stigma of the menstrual cycle.
The Best Gothic Horror Books To Get In The Mood For Halloween
October is here and we all know what that means: Halloween! A lot of people are already talking about Christmas, but we shouldn’t forget the holidays in between. Halloween is the perfect time for horror lovers and Autumn is the best time for book lovers, so why not combine the two? Cuddle up to a good, suspenseful book to prepare you for the abundance of horror films that’ll inevitably start playing. Here are a few great, Gothic Horror books for you to sink your teeth into (sorry for the pun!).
1. ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker
Obviously, we have to start with the classics. Dracula is one of the most recognisable Halloween characters and for good reason. Bram Stoker’s novel is a chilling read, if not admittedly a little difficult if you’re not used to the language. But within the first few chapters you’ll get used to the writing and enjoy the real story of the most famous vampire to date. He doesn’t sparkle or fight werewolves, but he does crawl along walls and drink blood…perfect to get into a spooky mood!
2. ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley
Another classic is ‘Frankenstein’. I was surprised by how differently Hollywood has portrayed Frankenstein’s monster compared to the book. There’s no mention of lightening or electricity, the creature’s creation remains a mystery. However, the story is just as unsettling and the creature just as horrifying. A classic Gothic Horror book to help you learn the true origins of the monster we all know and love.
3. The ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ Series by Derek Landy
For the younger readers, Derek Landy’s ‘Skulduggery Pleasant’ series is a great way to begin the Halloween season. More fantasy than Gothic Horror perhaps, but my Gothic lecturer will tell you herself how people have different views on what makes a text “Gothic”. It is an amazing young adult (YA) series with perfect sarcasm to suit the audience. The monsters are terrifying enough to creep you out over Halloween, but the main characters are what keeps you going back for more.
4. ‘The Bloody Chamber’ by Angela Carter
A series of short Gothic Horror stories, ‘The Bloody Chamber’ twists and retells famous fairy tales like ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘The Beauty and the Beast’. The stories are all suspenseful and eerie, portraying a variety of female protagonists. Many consider it a feminist text and rightly so, but it is also suited to anyone who enjoys reading spooky retellings of classic folktales. Thoughtful yet terrifying!
5. ‘The Monk’ by Matthew Lewis
Not everyone will have heard of, ‘The Monk’ but it is a staple text in the Gothic Horror genre. Anyone who’s read it will immediately picture the image of the ‘Bleeding Nun’. A gruesome scene that makes for a great page turner, especially on Halloween evening. This is one of our favorite gothic horror books!
6. The ‘Asylum’ Series by Madeleine Roux
Another YA collection, ‘Asylum’ is a paranormal series depicting creepy ghosts and terrifying buildings. Admittedly, I’ve only read the first book so far. But I thoroughly enjoyed the read; the pictures embedded into the text are incredibly eerie and adds to the spine-chilling atmosphere. For anyone interested in the paranormal, definitely ease yourself in with this starting book. This is one of the best gothic horror books!
7. ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde
A Victorian Gothic classic, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ had to be included. It seems like Gray is often forgotten about compared to his other famous friends, Dracula and Frankenstein. However, Wilde creates the perfect atmosphere for Halloween within his eerie versions of the streets of London. You can easily visualise the uncanny black and white setting as you join Gray on his unusual journey. Another classic worth revisiting for Halloween!
8. ‘The Demonata’ Series by Darren Shan
Another mix between Gothic Horror and fantasy, ‘The Demonata’ series is one of the most gruesome on the list. Many consider it a YA series, but when I first read it, I questioned it. The detail Shan goes into is petrifying and revolting, absolutely perfect for those who are full on gore lovers. Like me! For anyone who wants to dive right into the worst scenes imaginable, like eyes being gouged out and heads coming off, then definitely start with these.
9. ‘The Wasp Factory’ by Iain Banks
One of my absolute favourites, ‘The Wasp Factory’ is more of a psychological Gothic Horror novel that includes some rather disturbing scenes. Its protagonist shows psychopathic tendencies as he recounts the numerous times he was involved in the events that lead to different family member’s deaths. What’s worse is that he’s only a teenager! If you love animals, maybe give it a miss as you all know where psychopathic killers stereotypically tend to start.
10. Anything by Edgar Allan Poe
I will always recommend the father (in my opinion) of Gothic Horror, Edgar Allan Poe. From his spine-chilling poems to his eerie short stories, he is the perfect author for Halloween. ‘The Raven’, ‘The Oval Portrait’, ‘The Masque of the Red Death’, all contain perfect scenes to captivate and ultimately terrify you. Many are aware of his story, ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’. Once read, the beating of the victim’s heart will haunt you for nights on end. Poe is the perfect author for October.

They even have a full gluten-free menu to browse. Not only does it serve delicious food, but The Blueberry Inn also offers beautiful rooms that are often described as comfortable, stylish and the result of a great night sleep. Definitely have a nose if you visit and maybe you’ll decide to stay the night.
10. Soul Spice
Slightly unique from the rest, Soul Spice is a vegan market stall situated in Pontypridd market. It sells amazing vegan herbs and spices that will greatly improve any home-cooked meal. There is also a talented cook who creates wonderful vegan dishes that range from cakes, curry boxes, wraps and salads. Give it a visit and try them all, as soon as you smell it you’ll have no choice but to!
Even though these are some of my personal favourites, there are still plenty more places to try! Definitely go on a little adventure around Rhondda Cynon Taf and discover the rest. It’s just an excuse to go out and eat really, take it!
Why Real Shower Sex Isn’t Like How It Is In The Movies
Whenever a couple has shower sex in movies, it always looks so sexy and sensual. One surprises the other, they laugh and then it’s right down to business. There’s no taps poking up things, no bottles falling all over the place, it’s always as if it’s the best sex they’ve ever had. Don’t get me wrong, if it’s done right then it most definitely can be! But sometimes, I just wish there was a more realistic portrayal. Here’s a list of issues with shower sex that the movies don’t show you.
1. It is always awkward trying to position yourself.
Whether it’s in the shower or the bath, couples in movies always seem to do it so effortlessly. In reality, it takes so much more effort. You have to awkwardly place yourself until you’re both comfortable. Manoeuvring around tap heads and shampoo bottles isn’t that romantic. Trying to find the right position always depends on the shower shape, the things placed around you and obviously personal preference. All are factors that the actors never seem too bothered about.
2. Squashed breasts is not comfortable or sexy.
Women always look so sexy in movies. They’re splayed up against the wall smiling all happy, enjoying the moment. No. It doesn’t always work that way. Having your boobs squashed up against the wall or wet hair flapping in your face during shower sex does not improve the moment. These are things the writers never include. I can see why, don’t want to ruin the mood and all, but a bit of realism wouldn’t go unappreciated.
3. The showers in the films are always bigger.
One obvious difference is the budget of the movie. Couples usually get huge, spacious showers that have so much room to move around. In reality, unless you’re lucky or in a luxurious hotel, our showers are not that size. They’re usually attached to a bath, full of bottles or baskets that can get thrown around, or just too bloody tiny. Sometimes there’s a shower curtain or movable glass wall too. These bastards are so awkward unless you like getting a heart attack as they move under your weight. Falling out of the shower isn’t exactly sexy.
4. If you surprise me, I will punch you.
Sometimes, one partner will sneak in and surprise the other, creating a cute moment that gets steamy quickly. Not likely. You surprise me at my most vulnerable, prepare to be hit.
5. Women don’t wear makeup in the shower.
Unlike the actresses who get professional makeup artists to create beautiful wet hair and makeup looks, real women don’t wear makeup in the shower. If they do, it’s only to wash it off immediately. It hurts when it gets into your eyes and makes you look like a panda. It doesn’t stay perfectly pristine or make you look gorgeous, it’s terrifying. If someone is wearing makeup during shower sex, they’ll only scare their partner with clown-like makeup by the end of it.
6. You shower for a reason.
Sometimes you just can’t be arsed to have shower sex. You want to just wash and go get ready for the day. You’re showering for a reason. Couples in movies seem happy to have sex before getting for work, but most people don’t wake up early enough to have the time. It may make it easier to clean up and wash off the sweat, but showers are to prepare yourself. Sometimes you just want to relax or even just get it over and done with.
7. No one can agree on the temperature choice.
Most couples end up just turning the temperature up or down behind their partners back. It’s very unlikely that you’ll both agree on the temperature instantly. One usually wants it boiling, one likes it cold. It ruins the mood.
8. It usually ends with you both getting out to finish.
Sometimes it can really get you in the mood but makes you so frustrated that you both just grab some towels and finish in the room next-door. Not a bad thing, but why not just start in that room in the first place?
9. Most showers are full of our bath shit.
So. Many. Products. You’ll spend the first five minutes trying to manoeuvre around the many bottles and sponges that are littering the bathroom. As stated earlier, movie budgets means that the showers are so big, the actors never reach the props for that to be a problem.
10. Usually ends with a laugh not a scream.
Unlike the amazing orgasms shown in the movies, you and your partner will just end up standing in the shower, awkwardly holding each other up laughing. Shower sex is a fun experience but takes some work to perfect.
